The two Greek pilots, Michalis Poulikakos (left), and Vasilis Vasileiou (center) lived through the terrorist attack in Kabul.

A Greek pilot working in Afghanistan initially thought to be among the victims of Saturday’s shooting spree in Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel is safe and well.

Describing his ordeal to Greek media, Vasilis Vasileiou said he hid underneath his bed for hours to avoid detection by the gunmen who were targeting foreign nationals.

He added that at some point the gunmen entered his room on the sixth floor of the hotel and started shooting at the beds.

“It’s a miracle they did not spot me,” Vasileiou said.

His colleague, Michalis Poulikakos, also a pilot for Afghan airline airline Kam Air operating out of Kabul, was first to alert the Greek media that Vasileiou was safe.

Earlier, reports from Kabul suggested that a Greek national was among the victims.

Fourteen foreigners are confirmed to have died, along with four Afghans.
