Street fights broke out in the center of Athens between football fans on Monday evening, on the eve of the Champions League game between AEK and the Dutch team Ajax.
Police say that fans of Panathinaikos, AEK’s Athenian rivals, joined Ajax supporters in the clashes, hurling rocks and firebombs in scenes reminiscent of a war zone.
There have been reports of injuries, but no arrests have yet been made.
