Greece’s largest trade union organisation (GSEE) representing private-sector workers, has called for a 24-hour nationwide general strike on Wednesday.

The union is also organizing a rally in Klafthmonos Square in central Athens at 11:00 (0900 GMT) on Wednesday morning, urging workers, the unemployed and pensioners to take part.

Among its demands are an end to excessive taxation, a minimum wage of 751 euros per month, and collective labor agreements. They also call for a fair and viable social insurance system without cuts to benefits and pensions.

The strike will affect public transport in the greater Athens area, with STASY staff (metro, tram and trolley buses) participating in the strike. None of the three metro lines will be in operation on Wednesday. Ferries will not be running throughout the day, due to the participation of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) in the strike.

Athens buses will only be operating between 9:00 (0700 GMT) in the morning until 21:00 (1900 GMT) at night. Bus drivers will hold two brief work stoppages from the beginning of their shifts until 9:00, and again from 21:00 until the end of their shifts. Full bus operation is expected to be restored at 10:00 PM and buses will start to be taken out of service at 20:00 in the evening.
