As most of Greece basks in a three-day heatwave which could send temperatures in the capital soaring to around 36 degrees Celsius (96.8F), storms have hit the northern parts of the country.
Social media users from the city of Kavala have posted photos depicting stunning cloud formations just before the storm.
Meteorologists say that these formations are called shelf clouds. These can be one of nature’s most alarming and awesome phenomena.
Thankfully, it turned out that in Kavala these clouds threatened more than they delivered.
A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal, wedge-shaped arcus cloud. It is attached to the base of the parent cloud, which is usually a thunderstorm cumulonimbus, but could form on any type of convective clouds.
