A five-month suspended sentence was imposed by a Greek court on a Turkish national who strayed into the country on Wednesday.
Musa Alerik, who was charged with illegally crossing into the country at Evros, was also ordered to pay a fine of €1,500 ($1,800) before his deportation.
The Turkish national, who earlier faced a prosecutor in the town of Orestiada, claimed he had only strayed a meter inside Greek territory.
According to reports, Alerik was carrying out construction work near a Turkish customs office in the area when he went across the frontier.
In his defense he admitted that he strayed “for only a meter” inside Greece “due to a mistake in handling the machine”.
He also claimed that he did not hear or understand the warnings of Greek soldiers due to the noise of the digger.
