Greek giants Olympiacos Piraeus have named Portuguese manager Pedro Martins as a new coach.

Martins, 47, replaces Spaniard Oscar Garcia, who quit last week after club president Evangelos Marinakis sent the entire first team squad on holiday as punishment for under-performing.

Garcia had been in the job only three months.

The former Guimaraes, Rio Ave and Maritimo coach will take over from the end of the season, with caretaker manager Christos Kontis sitting on the Reds’ bench for the four remaining games of the Super League.

With four games left, Olympiacos’ hopes of winning a record eighth straight title are virtually over as they lie nine points behind leaders AEK Athens.

Greek football’s senior league competition has been in disarray this season and was suspended on March 12 by the government following scenes of PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis entering the pitch with a firearm during a fraught top-of-the-table clash against AEK.

Deputy Sports Minister Giorgos Vassiliadis later confirmed matches would resume, as would the Greek Cup.

The decision followed talks between the government, football officials and the 16 clubs to try and end a string of scandals over docked points, fan trouble and threats against officials.
