A leading scientist has warned that many coastal areas in Greece are at risk from rising sea levels due to global warming.
Climate change will bring a host of direct and indirect effects to Greece says Athanasios Argyriou, professor of the Department of Physics of the University of Patras.
Speaking to the Athens News Agency he said that “because of the country’s extensive coastline, many areas are at risk from rising sea levels, estimated to reach between 0.2 and 2 meters.”
Argyriou also said that “rainfall is expected to fall between 5% and 9% and temperatures are set to rise by 3 to 4.5 degrees Celsius.”
There will also be an increase in the intensity of solar radiation and winds. Those two effects, he notes, “can have a positive effect on the production of solar and wind power”.
Measures need to be taken to protect human life as well as property from global warming.
This, he explains, has two strands: “On the one hand, direct implementation of policies to limit the effects of climate change at national level and, on the other hand, Greece needs to apply political pressure on international organizations to rigorously implement environmental protection policies.”
At the same time, he adds that “the country needs to constantly improve its health and prevention infrastructure so it can be adequately prepared to cope with the health impact”.
