More than 1,000 migrants and refugees, including 612 children, have been relocated from Greece to Germany over the last several months following an agreement between the two countries.

According to a joint statement released by the Greek authorities and the German Embassy in Athens on Thursday, the relocation program for refugee children who are suffering from serious health conditions and their families has been completed.

Germany recognizes “the systematic efforts of Greece, as EU’s frontline border state,” to effectively manage the constant challenge of the migration influx, according to the statement.

Greece thanked Germany for its consistent and substantial help, calling it “a model of support and solidarity among all EU states.”

Commenting on the joint statement, Alternate Migration & Asylum Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos praised the successful completion of the program amid the difficulties posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
