Former MP Leoutsakos hits the ground during Wednesday’s clashes in Athens

At least one person was injured on Wednesday as Greek riot police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of protesters against home auctions, in central Athens.

Protesters, including a former SYRIZA minister and at least two former MP’s of the governing party, attempted to break the police ring and storm the notary’s office where online auctions were taking place.

Former MP Leonidas Leoutsakos, who left SYRIZA in protest at the party’s realistic turn, uploaded a photo on social media where he is seen being thrown to the ground by the riot police.

Similar scenes occurred in Thessaloniki in what correspondents say was a coordinated attempt by leftist groups to stop on line home auctions.

A total of 2,018 property auctions have been scheduled for the period up to Oct. 10 according the Notary Association of Athens, Piraeus, Aegean and Dodecanese.

The Athens Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) reported last week that around 885 property auctions are expected to be held in March although a marked number of scheduled auctions are currently under suspension or procedures have not yet been completed.
