Greek tennis champion Maria Sakkari came back from a set down against unseeded Bernarda Pera, a Croatian-born American, to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and advance to the third round of the US Open tennis championship on Thursday.
The No. 15 seed, who only last week experienced one of the highlights of her career by defeating Serena Williams at the Western & Southern Open, got an early scare in the match, losing the first set.
But the 25-year-old Greek held her ground and fought hard to turn things around. Sakkari gradually imposed her powerful backcourt game, finishing with an ace to snatch the win.
