Τhe Museum of Cycladic Art is offering an online tour of its iconic exhibition “Cycladic Society 5000 Years Ago,” which was first shown in 2016, as part of the special digital services the museum is sharing with the public during this time of continued social distancing.
The director of the museum, Professor Nikolaos Stampolidis, has made viewing this intriguing exhibition possible through a tour anyone around the world can take simply by clicking on the following link: https://cycladic.gr/page/kikladiki-kinonia-5000-chronia-prin.
The exhibition, held to mark the museum’s 30th anniversary, presents in a simple and comprehensible way the structure of Cycladic society, the natural environment, and the occupations of its inhabitants as well as their social and religious habits and beliefs, through the sculptures and other relics of early Cycladic culture during the Early Bronze Age (3200 to 2000 BC).
Visitors can tour the Cycladic Islands as they were 5,000 years ago, through texts and photographs, videos, maps, chronology and excerpts from the exhibition catalogue. It is also possible for the public to purchase the exhibition catalogue electronically.
At the same time, visitors to the website cycladic.gr can for the first time enjoy a four-minute film-poem in which Professor Stampolidis narrates the emergence and culture of early Cycladic society, guided by the iconic Cycladic figurine of a harp player – the symbol that, thanks to its pure form and timeless simplicity, determined the world history of art, from prehistory to the 21st century.
