Greece’s Armed Forces marked the anniversary of the War of Independence on Wednesday with a ceremony at the border with Turkey at Evros.
Army units raised the Greek flag near the crossing point to Turkey in the village of Kastanies.

Kastanies has been the focal point of repeated attempts by thousands of migrants and asylum seekers to storm the Greek border since Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared on March 1 they were free to move into Europe.
Meanwhile, Turkish jets continued violating Greek airspace even on the country’s national holiday.
Defense sources in Athens say Turkish F-16s violated the Greek airspace at least ten times by flying over the eastern Aegean islands, including the western edge of Lesvos, Farmakonisi, Ro and Agios Efstratios.
