Santorini Landscape by Kostas Spiriounis

An exhibition entirely based on the magical landscapes of Santorini, with an emphasis on 20th century Greek painters, has opened in Athens’ Benaki Museum.

A selection of eighty-four paintings by notable Greek artists will transport the visitor both to the unique landscape of Santorini as well as into a unique retrospective of Greek painting.

The works are part of the collection of Dimitris Tsitouras, who embarked on his art-collection quest in 1984, and whose stellar acquisitions now number 180 paintings.

“Santorini” by Nikos Egonopoulos

A great number of artists, some of them friends of Tsitouras, have portrayed the landscape of the island over the years, including the old port and the narrow alleys of Fira, Oia, Akrotiri and Ammoudi, from their own unique perspectives.

Painters such as Dimos Braessas, Vassos Germenis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos–Ghika, Yiannis Moralis, Spyros Vassiliou and younger artists, including Opi Zouni, Kostas Tsoklis and Pavlos Samios are just some of the landscapists whose works enrich the new exhibition.
