Greece has called on the UN mediator for the naming dispute with FYROM to refrain from interpreting Greece’s policy on the issue and making wrong assumptions.
In a statement Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said that he called Matthew Nimetz to “emphasize in a clear and rigorous manner that he is not competent to talk about the policy of Athens, nor to describe it in a wrong way.”
Kotzias was responding to a comment by the American diplomat who on Thursday said that he had not heard any sources in Athens heard any sources in Athens “denying the identity of the Macedonian people.”
Nimetz also called on the two sides to proceed quickly in solving the dispute. “Governments and circumstances change,” Nimetz said, urging the two neighboring countries to resolve the name problem now.
