The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expressed appreciation for the denunciation by Agricultural Development & Food Minister Makis Voridis of his neo-Nazi past.
In a radio interview, Board Secretary General Victor Eliezer had called on Voridis to explicitly denounce his past affiliations with extreme-right organizations.
On Saturday, Voridis had admitted that he had for many years been a member of nationalist political parties and organizations, but denied he had been an anti-Semite.
After listing evidence of his support for Israel in the past, he said, “I denounce all action, omission or tolerance on my part to the act of a third party that might be interpreted as anti-Semitic or neo-Nazi.”
In a statement on Tuesday, the Central Board said that it “takes into account and appreciates the explanations given by Mr. Voridis and hopes he will prove the sincerity of his statement with actions, with specific initiatives, following the examples of other politicians who did not hesitate to express their regret for positions they had adopted in the past.”
“We hope that he will continuously and explicitly support the fight against bigotry, racism and anti-Semitism that comprises, after all, a basic and long-term policy of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis,” the organization added.
