A Vatican delegation which visited refugees living in a rag-tag collection of tents on Lesvos on Thursday has donated more than $100,000 to Caritas Hellas and the projects supported by the Greek Catholic charity.
The delegation, led by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, toured the “unofficial” Moria camp, where more than 1,000 people are living outside a government-established camp which already housed nearly 5,000.
The official visit followed a mission undertaken by Pope Francis in 2016 to check on the status of refugees on the island of Lesvos. The Pope ended up taking twelve refugees home to Rome with him after his visit.
“Pope Francis has not forgotten the refugee issue,” Cardinal Krajewski stated during the Moria tour.
“He wants his voice to be heard all across Europe, all over the world. European countries must open their doors to refugees stuck in Greece. The Catholic Church is ready to welcome refugees and host them,” the cardinal added.
