Police in Greece have launched an investigation into three Greek nationals for allegedly insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, local media reports claimed Wednesday.
The three suspects had allegedly put up posters bearing the Turkish leader’s image and reading ‘Not wanted’ in Komotini, Western Thrace prior to Erdogan’s historic visit to the region in December.
The three are accused of insulting a foreign country’s leader.
However, correspondents say a trial can only take place if Turkey asks for their prosecution.
A member of a nationalist group called Spartakos who serves on Komotini’s city council is reportedly among the suspects.
In a statement posted on their website, the group admitted to putting up the posters.
Erdogan paid a historic two-day visit to Greece last month, the first by a Turkish president in 65 years, including a visit to Western Thrace which has a substantial Muslim minority.
