Outcry Over “Limited Impact” Vote for Greeks in the Diaspora

The government is under fire because of its controversial proposal to allow Greeks in the diaspora to vote in the next elections, but restricting their influence.

According to a report in Kathimerini, the proposal would allow Greeks abroad to vote to elect only three MP’s in the 300-seat parliament.

Their vote would, therefore, have a “limited impact” as no matter how many Greeks in the diaspora vote they would only be able to appoint three MPs.

The proposal is scheduled to be discussed in parliament next week, but to be voted into law, an enhanced majority of 200 MPs is required.

Opposition New Democracy accused governing SYRIZA of “playing games with the Greek diaspora” and says that the proposal is “unconstitutional” as it violates voting equality.

It is expected to lodge a counterproposal according to which all Greeks in the diaspora would have voting rights that would contribute to the final result, not just to a handful of MPs.
