Greek police have arrested three foreign nationals as suspects for the death of 25-year-old Nikos Moustakas at Filopappou Hill, opposite the Acropolis, last week.

According to reports two are Pakistanis, a 17-year-old and a 26-year-old, and one is Iraqi. The Pakistanis were arrested at the Eidomeni border crossing as they tried to flee Greece and the Iraqi was arrested in Athens.

The three suspects have reportedly admitted to their act, but denied that they pushed Nikos Moustakas off the cliff. They claim they tried to rob him and his girlfriend by threatening him with a broken bottle, and the young man resisted, stumbled, slipped and fell to his death.

Two of the suspects have been identified by Moustakas’ Portuguese girlfriend.

Police sources say that after the robbery, the suspects turned off their mobile phones and locked their profiles on social media. They also say that all three have been arrested in the past for similar style muggings.

On Thursday, Moustakas’ mother accused Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of “negligence and complicity” in her son’s death, blaming him for failing to boost security in Athens.

She also suggested that the Greek state boost security in the broader area “rather than allocating half the police force to the protection of politicians and their families.”
